Huger & Homelessness - Serving the Homeless
Description:
This award-winning restaurant has a passion for helping others! Café 458 isn’t your everyday restaurant. The kitchen and wait staffs are volunteers, and during the week, Café 458 provides nutritious meals to homeless men and women, served right in the restaurant. All the proceeds, including tips, support Samaritan House of Atlanta’s services that provide Atlanta’s homeless men and women with the tools and resources to gain self-sufficiency. The ASB Team will be working at Café 458 as waiters and waitresses for the hungry and homeless. This unique trip is sure to be memorable and insightful.

Disaster Recovery - Hurricane Katrina Relief
Description:
In response to hurricane Katrina, the Louisiana Conference formed Louisiana Disaster Recovery Ministry to serve the needs of those impacted by the devastation throughout the southern portion of Louisiana. Many people are still rebuilding their homes three years after the tragedy. The ASB team will be working on destroyed homes tearing out and removing to curbside items such as appliances, furniture, carpets, wallboard, insulation, miscellaneous debris and general cleaning of damaged residences. Other projects may include installation of insulation, drywall, and interior painting. This trip is an excellent way to get an inside perspective on how Hurricane Katrina and the ensuing reconstruction has affected the people of New Orleans.
Jekyll Island, GA
Georgia Sea Turtle Center
Animals & Environment– Sea Turtle Rescue and Environmental Conservation
Description:
Through sea turtle rehabilitation, research and education programs, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center increases awareness of habitat and wildlife conservation on Jekyll Island and the greater Georgia region. Stranded sea turtles are often found along Atlantic coast beaches. While most are dead, a small but increasing number are still alive. Before, there were no facilities in Georgia to treat the turtles, and they had to be transported long distances to centers in Florida and South Carolina. Unfortunately, these facilities are often filled to capacity, and the turtles cannot be treated adequately and may be prematurely released. The ASB Team be working with the Sea Turtle Center to perform projects related to helping the recovering turtles. Also, there will be projects relating to environmental conservation of Jekyll Island. Sea Turtles and the natural beauty of Jekyll Island are a winning combination on this trip.

Habitat for Humanity
Housing - Building Low Cost Homes for Families
Description:
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing ministry. Habitat welcomes all people--regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or any other difference--to build simple, decent, affordable houses with those who lack adequate shelter. Homeowners are selected based on their need for housing, their ability to repay a mortgage and their willingness to work in partnership with Habitat. The ASB Team will be working with a Habitat Affiliate to help build houses throughout the week. Tasks may include a wide range of construction procedures such as drywall, roofing, woodwork etc. No prior training or skills are required because on-site training is provided to all volunteers. If you’re interested in learning your way around a toolbox and helping a family in need this is the trip for you.
Immokalee, FL
Friendship House
Hunger & Homelessness - Migrant Worker Issues
Description:
Immokalee, a town in Southwest Florida, is the state's most important center for agricultural production and has the state's largest farm worker community. Friendship House is a shelter for homeless men, women and children many of whom are migrant farm workers. The ASB Team will be working with this important organization on various projects throughout the week. The exact itinerary for the trip is not yet complete, but projects that have been discussed have been along the lines of volunteering at the homeless shelter, serving dinner to the homeless, helping teach English to migrant workers, helping work on houses, etc. This promises to be an eye opening trip for those interested in learning more about the plight of migrant workers and how the issues they face affect everyone.

The Elephant Sanctuary
Animals – Endangered Elephant Awareness
Description:
The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, founded in 1995, is the nation's largest natural habitat refuge developed specifically for endangered African and Asian elephants. It operates on 2,700 acres in Hohenwald, Tennessee - 85 miles southwest of Nashville. The Elephant Sanctuary exists to accommodate old, sick or needy elephants in a comfortable setting and to educate the public about these amazing, yet endangered, creatures. The ASB Team will spend their time to indirectly help the elephants. There are many ongoing and special on-site work projects such painting some of the miles of fencing that will protect their sanctuary, renovating structures, or even helping to clean up or remove barbed wire in new areas of habitat the elephants have not yet explored. Anyone interested in learning about elephants and what it takes to run an Elephant sanctuary is sure to have a wonderful trip.

Cumberland Trail
Environmental Conservation – Nature Trail Building
Description:
The Cumberland Trail is a rugged, historical trail celebrating the heritage of Tennessee. Students and volunteers stay in East Tennessee and participate in trail building/maintenance for a week. ASB volunteers will be taking part in a wide range of activities such as using fire rakes to clear leaf cover on the trail, using hand clippers and pocket saws to clear small limbs and bushes from the trail corridor, using mattocks to make a level trail by cutting into hillsides and ridges, installing water bars to control erosion, building rock steps and footbridges, and painting blazes on trees in order to mark the trail. This is a great opportunity to learn about the beautiful plant and animal life as well as helping to finish a part of the incredible 300 mile trail.

Mid-Atlantic Border Collie Rescue
Animals – Dog Rescue
Description:
The Mid-Atlantic Border Collie Rescue is a not-for-profit organization that is run by volunteers. Fundamentally, Mid-Atlantic Border Collie Rescue is a haven for Border Collies and dogs of the Herding group that have been discarded, neglected, abandoned or stray. Many of these dogs are turned into animal shelters because their previous owners discovered they were not border collie material or because changes in their lives left them unable to care properly for their dogs. These dogs are rescued from an uncertain future and placed into responsible homes. ASB Volunteers will be performing a variety of tasks related to helping the MABCR. This is going to be a fun trip for any animal lovers.

Youth & Education – Elementary School Teaching
Description:
Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. Junior Achievement programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. Students put these lessons into action, and learn the value of contributing to their communities. The ASB Team will be working with students in an elementary school to teach the Junior Achievement curriculum. If you like working with kids and want to teach something they can use for the future this is the trip for you.
